When should I pay a homestay host?

Payment timing is agreed between the guest and the host. There is no fixed rule, but the following guidance reflects common practice.

Typical arrangement

Most hosts expect payment on arrival, either for the first week or for the full stay if it is a short visit. For longer stays, weekly payments in advance are common.

Agree before you arrive

Before arriving, make sure you and your host have agreed on:

The weekly fee
When the first payment is due
The preferred payment method (cash, bank transfer, etc.)
Whether a bond or deposit is required

Use the on-site messaging system to confirm these details in writing before your arrival.

Keep a record

Always keep a record of payments made — a simple written receipt or a bank transfer reference is sufficient. This protects both you and your host if any dispute arises.

Never pay a large sum in advance to someone you have not met. We recommend paying no more than one or two weeks in advance until you are settled and comfortable with the arrangement.
